ABOUT SSL CERTIFICATES
What is an SSL Certificate and why do I need it?
You DO want to order an SSL Certificate (ask for it) because Google is beginning to remove websites from the ranking if they do not have the SSL “protection” and you really need to get it from your hosting server in order for it to be more secure than even less secure. SSL Certificates (also called “digital certificates”) are used to establish a secure encrypted connection between a browser (user’s computer) and a server (website). The SSL connection protects sensitive data, such as credit card information, exchanged during each visit (session). It can also protect data such as e-mail addresses from being collected then spammed.
Verisign ’s description:
“SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a global standard security technology that enables encrypted communication between a web browser and a web server. It is utilized by millions of online businesses and individuals to decrease the risk of sensitive information (e.g., credit card numbers, usernames, passwords, emails, etc.) from being stolen or tampered with by hackers and identity thieves. In essence, SSL allows for a private “conversation” just between the two intended parties. To create this secure connection, an SSL certificate (also referred to as a “digital certificate”) is installed on a web server and serves two functions:
1) It authenticates the identity of the website (this guarantees visitors that they are not on a bogus site),
2) It encrypts the data that’s being transmitted.”
There are different kinds of SSL Certificates and different levels of “true security” based on who you trust to get your SSL from. ikan-ikon’s policy is to declare that client’s should not get a free SSL Certificate because it cannot be guaranteed as secure, it does not come directly from the hosting server, it may not always be free after they own you, and you are adding another layer of possible problems in your attempt at making your website more secure! Keep it simple and err on the safe side, just get your SSL from the same server that hosts your website and have it all included in your 1 fee you pay each year for your domain name, hosting, and SSL Certificate.
There is a new terrible trend happening wherein hackers are using programs they create to fish random websites online to see if they are hackable. They are doing this with regular tiny local businesses and while ikan-ikon websites have never been hacked (yet thank God), they have tried and we have caught them trying, so that is how we know this is happening. So far these hackers have not been successful with protected hard-coded websites but they HAVE hacked Wordpress and Joomla websites which have no security, are back-end and front-end susceptible online, and their developers have not been updating their security measures as required with all technology, so Wordpress and Joomla and other Content Management Systems CMS websites are providing hackers with easy access to all the information exchanged on those websites!
Internet security has become necessary and SSL Certificates are the way Google is trying to provide at least some level of protection for web site surfers. Therefore, we have added SSL Certificates to our Website Maintenance package.
